Taking its name from the Irish word for a day or 24-hour period, Lá takes listeners on a similar musical journey. Beginning with soft piano chirps at “dawn,” the piece heralds a new day with the warm tones of a highland bagpipe. A major-key melody carries you through a glorious day — the kind where the sun shines from blue skies, through cool breezes, onto gentle countenances. Themes and motifs swirl like recurring conversations or lucky numbers that keep popping up, as the day grows longer and darker. The heavy beats and swagger of the nightlife emerge, a Mr. Hyde to the earlier Dr. Jekyll. As the night comes to an end, melodies from the day’s journey continue to dance and glide into a rising cyclone of oblivion.
